Hi friends! At the start of the new year, I decided it was time to really kick my healthy living game up a notch. One of the first things I started implementing is this green smoothie first thing every single morning. I make & drink this before I eat any other food, and TRY my best to drink it before having my morning coffee (that doesn't always happen haha)! Your stomach is an empty slate when you wake up, so it's really going to soak up whatever you put in it right away! That's why I make it my goal to have this green smoothie first thing since it's super easy to digest, and is packed full of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants!

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup water

  • 1 cup ice

  • Juice from 1 lemon (or about 1.5 TBS lemon juice)

  • 1/2 TBSP chia seeds

  • 1/4 TBSP turmeric

  • Ginger root (peeled)

  • 1 cups spinach

  • 2 stalks of celery

  • 1/2 frozen banana

  • 1/2 or 1 cup frozen mango

DOUBLE SMOOTHIE

Mason loves this smoothie too! And I feel great sending him off to work after a nutritious start to his day. So when I'm making it for me & my husband, I just double the recipe! Or if I'm not sharing with him, I sometimes double it anyway, and put half in an airtight mason jar to keep for the next morning. :)

  • 2 cups water

  • Juice from 1 lemon (or about 3 TBS lemon juice)

  • 1 TBSP chia seeds

  • 1/2 TBSP turmeric

  • Ginger root (peeled)

  • 2 cups spinach (or kale)

  • 2-3 stalks of celery

  • 1 frozen banana

  • 1 to 2 cups frozen mango

  • Ice to fill blender

This smoothie tastes amazing! I know, I know... celery, turmeric, spinach? in a fruit smoothie?! I promise it's delicious! I can really only taste the banana, mango & ginger. Each of the ingredients listed has a very specific purpose for being in this health-packed smoothie. My husband AND my baby both like it! It's so important to me that my family eats healthy & takes care of their bodies. Kane is in a stage where whatever I am eating or drinking, he HAS to have some, so I love sharing this smoothie with him, knowing he is getting so many nutrients into that little body of his! Here's a snapshot of why your body will thank you for ingesting these good-for-you ingredients:

LEMON

Lemon is super detoxifying and packed full of vitamin C. It is shown to promote hydration, support weight loss, improve your skin quality, aid in digestion, prevent kidney stones, among other things. The citric acid in lemons has also been shown to protect liver function and prevent against oxidative damage.

CHIA SEEDS
Chia seeds may be tiny but they are a huge source of omega-3 fatty acids & antioxidants. They also provide fiber, iron, and calcium. Omega-3 fatty acids are important because they help raise the "good" cholesterol (HDL), which helps protect against strokes & heart attacks.

TURMERIC

Again, you won't taste this in your smoothie. You really only need a small amount of turmeric in order to reap the massive benefits! Turmeric is an anti-inflammatory & antioxidant that may help improve symptoms of depression and arthritis. It has also been scientifically proven to potentially help prevent heart disease, Alzheimer's, and cancer. My fav reason for adding this to my morning smoothie is the proven cognitive function. Who couldn't use a little brain boost in the morning?!

SPINACH

It is so important to work dark leafy greens into your daily diet, and since spinach has nearly no taste, adding it to smoothies is a great way to do that! Spinach is an excellent source of vitamin K, which helps maintain bone health, vitamin A, vitamin C and folate (folate is SO IMPORTANT for women who are trying to get pregnant, are pregnant, or are nursing)! It is also a good source of magnesium, iron and vitamin B2. Most women are not consuming enough magnesium, so learn from Popeye and spinach up, ladies!!

CELERY

I'm no pro, but I'm sure you've been seeing that celery juicing is a huge health trend right now, but for good reason! It is believed to help reduce bloat and clear acne, both things we would rather do without, am I right? Celery can also lower inflammation, reduce high cholesterol, and the fiber in celery can benefit the digestive and cardiovascular systems.

GINGER

People have been using ginger for medicinal purposes for years! It can be a natural remedy for nausea, stomach pain, and other health issues. The antioxidants and nutrients in ginger may also help with inflammation, fighting infection, and treating arthritis.

So there you have it! The perfect recipe for a delicious, health-packed green smoothie! Let me know if you try it & what you think!!

xo,

Kayla
